Week of Feb 20th

One of our students brought in a lovely book about Ruby Bridges, to help us extend our learning with regards to Black History Month. The students were wonderfully attentive and engaged when we discussed the importance of recognizing Black History Month.  It has opened a lot of doors for further exploration and conversation regarding our past and the importance of showing acceptance, tolerance, kindness and appreciation for all. Last week we completed our learning task as it relates to writing our autobiography. We have now directed our focus towards writing a biography. As a class we learned about Ruby Bridges and together learned the first steps required to gather information and organizing it into a proper sequence required for a biography.

Today we learned about Viola Desmond and why she has earned her place on our Canadian 10 dollar bill. For the rest of the week, we will continue to research other significant and impactful men and women who deserve to be honoured and recognized today and every day of the year.

In Math, we have learned how to write a multiplication sentence and model multiplication as equal groups. In doing so we have also built on our understanding the connection between multiplication and repeated addition. This week the students learned how to model multiplication using arrays. Through the use of arrays we were also able to explain what the commutative property of multiplication is i.e. 3x6 and 6x3.

To support our ability to learn our multiplication tables the students have been encourage to skip count on their fingers to help them. As a class, we have learned to find the sum by skip counting by 2s,3s,4s,5s, up to the multiple of 10. Instead of writing out the whole addition pattern, we can use our fingers to keep track of how many times we add. By holding up a fist we raise our thumb and say the first number in the pattern and so on.
