  One of our students brought in a lovely book about Ruby Bridges, to help us extend our learning with regards to Black History Month. The students were wonderfully attentive and engaged when we discussed the importance of recognizing Black History Month.  It has opened a lot of doors for further exploration and conversation regarding our past and the importance of showing acceptance, tolerance, kindness and appreciation for all. Last week we completed our learning task as it relates to writing our autobiography. We have now directed our focus towards writing a biography. As a class we learned about Ruby Bridges and together learned the first steps required to gather information and organizing it into a proper sequence required for a biography.   Today we learned about Viola Desmond and why she has earned her place on our Canadian 10 dollar bill.   "We have been learning about how the Ozobots work and the coding. Coding means you are giving it commands by drawing some colours on a line. The codes give commands like go really fast, spin or zig zag. We were learning about Fairy Tales and what makes and then we had to recreate and write a fairy tale in our own words.  Then we made a storyboard and then we drew a map with codes and the setting and characters. The coding was a bit tricky because for some of them I could not get it correct. The ozobot became a character in my story. It was the Little Red Riding-hood and I made the Ozobot go nitro boost when it went through  the forest and a 30 second stop when it got near the wolf. " Grade 3 Student Room 8

 Telus Sparks Field Trip On Tuesday, we had a wonderful day at Telus Sparks. A big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who joined us and made our trip possible. Our day was filled with everything related to technology, from learning how to code a Lego set that we built to watching a robot dog do its tricks and then discovering all of the amazing gifts that Leonardo Di Vinci contributed to our world. The students had a terrific time, and we came away with so many wonderful new discoveries. This trip was designed to be a springboard for our new Computer Science Unit. In this unit, we will foster our problem-solving and scientific inquiry by learning to apply creativity and designing skills to develop computational thinking.  Once we return to class from a field trip, we will often take the time to reflect on our experience and create a page in our journal. Our week started with a beautifully illustrated novel called " Monkey Business" by Wallace Edwards. It is a book with a collection of elaborate, off-beat illustrations that feature animals comically engaged in the activities of commonly used idioms (i.e., a bull in a china shop, an alligator that 'eats her words...). We had lots of fun deciphering what the idioms meant and had an elaborate conversation about why understanding an idiom is important when reading a story. We discovered that we should learn idioms to understand the real message an author or speaker wants to convey so there will be no misunderstanding.  We also used Frayer's Model to focus on a chosen idiom phrase. A Frayer Model is a graphic organizer that  helps students determine or clarify the meaning of vocabulary words encountered while listening, reading, and viewing texts .  Welcome Back, and Happy New Year! It was wonderful to see everyone back at school this week. We did not waste any time jumping back into our learning tasks. After working so hard on our Science food chain research projects, students were busy this week learning how to use the stop motion app and creating their claymation movies. We quickly discovered that teamwork is so important to successfully filming and moving our figures on the setting mats. Next week we hope to add our scripts to the films and share our movies with you and the rest of the class. When your child has finished their movie, I will teach them how to be able to show it to you when they access their Gmail account. In Social Studies, we have been discussing the term quality of life and what factors contribute to our quality of life. We discussed what makes us feel healthy, happy, secure, safe, and comfortable? These included,: Food and water, clothing and shelter, friends and family, job or source of money to buy necessary things, schooling to be able to read and write, freedom to act and ability to get around (transportation), opportunities to do interesting things, safety and protection and health care. We discussed the difference between needs and wants and learned to differentiate between goods and services. In math, we continued to practice our ability to add and subtract four-digit numbers with and without regrouping. This can be a tricky concept, so I have put several links containing videos on our Google Classroom to help explain the steps we have learned in class.   This week in math, we have transitioned from adding three and four-digit numbers with and without regrouping to learning how to subtract with regrouping using 1 hundred blocks as 10 ten blocks, or 1 tens block as ten ones blocks or both. We learned how to use base ten sketches and the standard algorithm. As we moved into subtraction, we took some time to review the importance of understanding what a fact family is. A fact family is a group of math facts using the same numbers. In the case of addition/subtraction, you can use three numbers and get four facts. For example, you can form a fact family using the three numbers 18,22 and 4: 18+4=22, 4+18=22, 22-18=4 and 22-4=18. We can use fact families, to reinforce or learn the connection between addition and subtraction and to help memorize the basic addition and subtraction facts.
